You know, I really wanted part three of this series to be the one where the truck finally started. And the truck did too because when I went out and took these photos I went to start it and it almost coughed to life. But this isn’t burger king and I can’t always have it my way. Now with that out the way we can move on to the stuff you really want to hear.
I’ve checked all the basic principals, it’s getting spark, air and fuel. I’ve put fresh gas in it, new plug wires and cleaned the plugs so their not as sooty, so it should be firing up right? Well it should but there’s something I never told you guys because I just found out about it recently. This truck had recently overheated and that explains a lot. Now best case senario is that it blew the head gasket and it’s causing the cycldiners to lose compression. Worst case sencario, the head is warped or burnt valves or the piston rings got too hot and messed up.
I’m hoping and assuming that it’s the head gasket because that seems to be the most common symptom of these trucks overheating. (and the internet is never wrong right?) But I won’t be able to find out until I’m able to get my hands on a compression tester.
Also have you noticed how there always seems to be a battery charger in all of my pictures? Yeah I think the battery is bad also.
Total cost of the truck so far: $20
Time spent on truck: 7 Hours

It has a new radiator in it and all the hoses I could see looked good but i haven’t checked out the t-stat or the fan n’ stuff yet.

Head gaskets almost never cause an engine to not start. Neither does low compression unless it’s way below about 50% of where it should be. Make sure it has enough fuel pressure, simply having fuel in the rail doesn’t mean it has enough fuel. Make sure the injectors are actuating, you should be able to hear them click with a stethoscope or use a noid light to verify signal.

I used to have an S-10 of that generation. I found the cab a bit cramped. Also, I apparently over-revved it once and bent a pushrod.
